Thirteen students embarked on an unforgettable trip to CERN in Switzerland, immersing themselves in the cutting-edge world of particle physics and technological innovation. The students had the privilege of interacting with several eminent scientists, especially Dr Archana Sharma, CERN’s Principal Scientist. They also interacted with Philip Matthews who provided them with deeper insights into the intricacies of particle physics. They had a memorable interaction with Rolf Heuer, the Director-General during the groundbreaking discovery of the Higgs Boson, discussing the innovative cancer therapy developed at CERN using proton beams and its potential applications in India. One of the highlights was their interaction with Piotr Traczyk, who delved into the mysteries of the Higgs boson. The students were also treated to a fascinating demonstration of simulations created at CERN, showcasing the advanced computational techniques used in their research. The trip included visits to some of CERN’s most impressive machinery, such as the Synchrocyclotron and the ATLAS experiment. The students toured various workshops, gaining a hands-on understanding of the complex machines and processes that drive CERN’s research. They explored the CERN Microcosm, a museum dedicated to making complex scientific concepts accessible through interactive exhibits and workshops on science communication. Beyond CERN, the students immersed themselves in the rich cultural and natural beauty of Switzerland. They explored the Red Cross Museum and the charming old town of Geneva. The journey extended beyond Switzerland, with visits to Bern, Zurich, and Interlaken, as well as the Lindt Chocolate Factory, Chamonix in France, Lake Titisee in Germany, and the majestic Rhine Falls. These excursions provided a perfect blend of education and leisure, enriching their overall experience. This extraordinary trip not only offered a comprehensive insight into the pioneering work at CERN but also showcased the breathtaking beauty and cultural richness of Switzerland.
