Humanity
By Krisha Khanna Monday, Jul 19, 2021
The actions of the past few weeks have made me rebelieve in the existence of humanity. As a teenager, many a time, I have felt that the whole world is full of deceit where everyone is led by selfish reasons. However, this image of the ‘ big bad world’ was shattered for me recently and the credit for that goes to Gen Zs on social media. Ironic much?
While everything has its pros and cons, in this particular situation surrounding the pandemic, social media’s pros have beaten its cons. For the past month, Instagram creators have been using their platforms to arrange for resources for Covid patients. This did not stop at Instagram creators with a hundred thousand followers. It soon spread to the mass of Instagram users, especially Gen Zs who have now created new Instagram pages, websites all dedicated to helping those in dire need. Consequently, there was a large amount of false information being spread as well. To overcome this, a lot of resource groups were formed on WhatsApp etc. where each member had to verify the oxygen supplier, availability of beds or availability of Remdesvir.
People have shown that humanity comes before anything be it your political stance or financial situation. Recently, one of my friends was helping a group with resources and leads. She had arranged an oxygen cylinder for a man, who needed it to help his mother. Unfortunately, his mother passed away so he could not use that cylinder. Instead, he contacted my friend and asked her if anyone else required it and then he himself went and delivered it to the other person. In that moment of grief, he felt that the best thing to do was to prevent another person from experiencing that very grief.
These events made me realise the sheer power of unity among people. We have understood that instead of only blaming the government for the poor healthcare, we had to take some steps on our own. And we did that and helped save lives. While most news channels were only focusing on the various state elections, an entire younger generation was using the power of social media to help Indians live. The very internet toolkits for which Disha Ravi was arrested in February have today proven beneficial to our citizens. Let that sink in!
